Although this area of Pammukale Hierapolis has been occupied earlier it was not until 200BC that the reputation of the Holy City-of Hierapolis became a sacred place of healing.

Doctors at that time prescribed regular baths at Pammukale in the natural thermal pools and thousands upon thousands of pilgrims travelled from far and wide to seek cures. The thermal pools contain many properties including healing minerals Thus includes bicarbonate, colloid iron, sulphur and calcium carbonate.

As the heat from the pools rises, they leave behind deposits of calcite that created and still create these magnificent travertines. The Turkish name “Cotton Castles “comes from the fact that the travertines look very cotton-like. The shimmering travertines cover every inch of all the 17 terraces.

Mythology talks of many people being cured by the healing properties of these pools. There are many stories about Hierapolis and travertines. One story is about a plain young lady who was so upset about her looks she plunged into a thermal pool. A lord coming past saved her and she was made by the pools into a beautiful woman and married the Lord

We continue our journey in our buses that give you a great view of the surrounding area as you are sitting high up. This gives you the best advantage to view the amazing landscapes, forests and small villages. it’s a scenic drive that takes is three and three-quarter hours from Marmaris to Pammukale.

At Pammukale the three hours there will be very impressive for you with much to see and learn about to inspire your senses. It took many thousands of years for the waters of Pammukale to create these incredible travertines with their white calcite deposits that stand out spectacularly in sharp contrast to the clear blue warm thermal waters of the pools.

It will take your breath away it’s so incredible the whole experience this was such a massive City and archaeologists have discovered 1200 tombs. Such was the fame of these pools that it drew Roman Emperors including Hadrian. Hadrian was taken by it that he built the great Amphitheater.

A vast artistic tribute that seated 15,000 people. They sat amongst beautifully carved friezes and columns. The theme was Dionysius, “ The God of wine and fertility “ The century later another Roman Emperor Caracalla made his pilgrimage to Hierapolis and a Pammukale calling it a sacred and privileged place.

This was the golden age of Hierapolis with a population of 100,000 people. Many fine buildings were built. There are Collonaded streets, bathhouses, necropolis and theatres. Some of the structures collapsed during the massive earthquake of 60 AD .but these fallen columns and quaint carvings provided a quaint historic touch to the amazing mineral thermal travertines today.

When the Christians arrived in the 3rd and 4th Centuries all changed at that time earthquakes shook the area and people fled leaving the area as it was. Remember you are bathing in these ancient thermal warm pools as the Romans did, filled with mineral-rich waters where you can swim amongst some submerged columns of antiquity.

It’s relatively easy to walk up the travertines and the views below and around you are just amazing. At the top of the travertines lies the Ruins of Hierapolis City walking is easy and there are good paths. you can see all the incredible ruins. The city’s original Byzantine Gate, the temples.

The weather worm friezes of the theatre and so many more as you meander peacefully. a truly incredible place with views to die for from the top of the 200-meter-high cliffs. Whilst you are here at Hierapolis you can enjoy refreshments from the cafes at the top of the travertines and feel in awe of where you are. You have three hours

It’s incredible to think you have bathed in ancient waters were many Roman Emperors soaked and the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and do you know this area is even mentioned in our Holy Bible. Another interesting fact is that The King of Permanon Eumenes 11 named the city in honour of his wife the founder of this dynasty.

So it was used by the Romans and during the Byzantine period. There are also places on the Travertines with mud baths as well as the pools. What is important to think about is that thermal waters are said to be cures for rheumatism. sciatica, skin disinterest, nervous complaints, back pain and so many other ailments.

The waters are warm around 37-50 as the earth below from far beneath the core brings the heat up with the incredible minerals. Ladies will love the fact that it’s said it stops wrinkles. Connecting with history is important as well as caring for ourselves and giving ourselves some healing, fresh air and viewing a wonder of the world.

We know much to return with us wanting more of this spectacular place to enjoy, unwind and enjoy the opportunities here At 14-30, we meet up again and take to the roads again feeling refreshed and wonderful.
