It is like a film set with the expectation that the Knights will appear around one of the corners of the elegant antique houses .no wonder that many well-known films have been made here. Rhodes is more like a Turkish bazaar than any other Greek city.

As you meander the Rhodes streets you cannot help being touched by the history of Rhodes where a handful of Knights were the last Christians in a part of the world mostly Muslim with the Ottoman Turks. When the city did fall in 1523, the Knights were given safe passage and left Rhodes with 5000 Christian inhabitants who chose to leave rather than be controlled by the Sultan.

The City of Rhodes remains a vibrant city full of intrigue. As you enter the Gate at Navarbhou of the gate of Elefthemad you see the remains of the 3-rd. century Temple of Aphrodite and behind it the Lodge of the Knights of Aiberne built-in 1507. If you decide to walk through the castle you walk through several thousands of years of history If you desire a birds-eye view of the city goes up the clock tower. The views are breathtaking.

It costs a few euros and when you come down trade your ticket for a drink at the bar. As you walk into Offerors Street it is wider with lots of squares, alleys, mosques and palaces around. There are also Turkish baths there.

The old city is safe, closed to vehicles and the narrow streets just fascinating. It’s easy to just stumble upon treasures and you can never get bored. You will enjoy it as it’s a shopper’s paradise. The medieval walls enclosed an enchanting microcosm a place where different eras, cultures and archaeological styles meet. It’s easy just to meander but maps are sold everywhere.

To write the history one needs a book, so this is purely a glimpse of it all. It has seen the ancient Greeks, Byzantines, Ottomans, Italians, English, Jews and does many more. There is a romantic view, but the truth is there are many ghosts in Rhodes. With them many archaeologists, tour guides, artists, permanent residents, guest houses, hotels and cooks still writing a story of Rhodes which has been unfolding for the past 3000 years.
